Kolkata: A 30-feet Paroma statue, one of the biggest pieces of Kolkata's public art, disappeared suddenly.
It is believed that the statue, which stood for 27 years on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, disappeared on Monday night and now debris of the sculpture is only left at the venue.
According to sources, the Trinamool Congress government in the state had ordered to replace it with a big globe.
The Paroma statue lent the traffic roundabout its name - Paroma Island.
State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said that the Paroma was too old.
Artist Shanu Lahiri had in 1987 installed the sculpture. He passed away last year.
When Shanu's daughter, Damayanti Lahiri, was informed about the incident, she was shocked.
“This is an insult. We have never thought of this... The statue was standing there nearly for 30 years,” Damayanti said.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, the statue's custodian, has refused divulge any details related to the statue.
