Kolkata: Tight security measures have been put in place across Kolkata after central intelligence agencies alerted city police about the possibility of a terror attack in the city, especially in the port area.
Surojit Karpurakayastha, Kolkata Police Commissioner, said that on the basis of intelligence agencies alert, security has been stepped up in the port area and the city. The Coast Guard and other agencies have been alerted.
Yesterday, the India Navy withdrew two warships from the eastern port of Kolkata in the backdrop of intelligence inputs. According to Navy Spokesman Captain DK Sharma, two naval warships -- INS Khukri and INS Sumitra -- that had docked in Kolkata on Monday were ordered back into sea for operational reasons.
The rare move came two days after a suicide bomber killed nearly 60 people at the Wagah border on the Pakistani side.
The ships were meant to be in port until Friday for public viewing as part of ceremonies in the run-up to Navy Day next month.
According to the intelligence input, terrorists might carry out an attack in port area and may also use small boats to carry out the attack.
India has been on higher alert since al Qaeda announced the formation of an Indian branch of the militant outfit to spread Islamic rule and raise the flag of jihad.
