The massacre forced the government to adopt a tough stand when it decided to go all out against the insurgents. The Home Ministry deployed more than 1.2 lakh paramilitary personnel to provide security during the multi-phased Lok Sabha elections across the country and was credited with its successful completion with relative peace.
