New Delhi: Air Marshal Arup Raha is presently the Vice Chief of Indian Air Force. He is a fighter pilot and holds over 3,400 hours of flying experience.He will take over as IAF chief on

He was posted as the Vice Chief of Air Staff on July 1, 2013. Prior to that, he served as  the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force from June 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.



He has been the Directing Staff at Flying Instructors' School, Tambaram, Chennai. From 8 June 1992 to 5 June 1994 he was the CO of the 47 Squadron IAF then based in Pune.

He has served as Air Attache at the Indian embassy in Ukraine.

He takes over as a chief at a time when IAF is grappling with just 34 fighter squadrons (each with 16 to 18 jets) when at least 44 are needed for “effective dissuasive deterrence” against China and Pakistan.
