He was apponted as DGP Goa Police in 2009,where he discharged his services for almost two years.
It was in 2012 when he again returned to Delhi Police and took over as special CP; Administration after Neeraj Kumar took over as Delhi Police Chief .
Three officers of the AGMUT cadre, Bassi and two of his batchmates, Ajay Chaddha and Kanwaljit Deol, were in the race for the job. Chaddha, DG (DG) of ITBP, is due to retire in August this year hence his name was not considered.
Kanwaljit Deol, DG (Investigations) NHRC, who has 15 months left before her superannuation in October 2014, too was discussed as a possible choice for Delhi police chief post. But Bassi was the front-runner for the post, thus the scale tilted in the favour of him.
