At the time of brutal massacre of Sikhs in the National Capital in 1984 he was serving as Additional DCP of New Delhi district
Later he was moved to Security wing as the DCP.
His first posting as DCP of a district was with North East .
He has also served as DCP for North district for a period of three and half years.
After that he joined Intelligence Bureau and was appointed as the Inspector General of Police of Chandigarh .
Bassi made a return to Delhi Police in 2002 as Joint CP to southern range.
