Centre warns Meghalaya over law and order situation

Shillong: The NDA government Wednesday warned the Congress government in Meghalaya over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state's Garo Hills region where rebels shot dead a tribal woman in front of her

Josbina Sangma was shot dead after she resisted the GNLA cadres' attempt to molest and rape her late Tuesday at Rajaronggat village, near the India-Bangladesh border and about 360 km from Shillong, in South Garo Hills district, police said,

The murder took place inside Sangma's house compound in the village when two of the five GNLA rebels' armed with AK rifles fired at the woman's head in front of her children, said district police chief Lakardor Syiem.

"It is one of the most gruesome and inhuman cold blooded murder... they used an AK rifle and fired five to six shots at her head in front of the children while her husband was prevented from coming out of the house," Syiem told IANS.

Meghalaya Home Minister Roshan Warjri condemned the killing and said police are already on the job to nab the killers.

The GNLA, one of the five Garo tribal rebel groups, is fighting for a separate Garoland to be carved out of Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya's opposition National People's Party (NPP) submitted a memorandum to Rijiju, stating that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated to such a level that the government was unable to control it and was looking completely helpless.
