A class 5 student lost his life and 15 others were injured in a school bus accident at Vallakai in Kannur on Wednesday. A bus carrying students from Kurumathur Chinmaya School lost control on a hill to take students home after school hours and overturned near Vallakkai bridge.
Victim trapped under bus
The deceased student was ejected from the bus and slipped under the bus. Though locals rushed him to the hospital, she succumbed to his injuries. The injured students were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Quick rescue efforts by locals
Locals responded immediately, and rescue operations began as soon as the accident happened. The immediate response allowed the injured students to receive medical attention in a timely manner.
Government response
Confirming the news, the Kerala government’s public relations department said, "A Class 5 student lost her life in the school bus accident in Valakkai, Kannur. The bus belonged to Kurumathur Chinmaya School and was transporting students home after school hours."
Similar incident in 2017
This is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred. In 2017, a school bus belonging to Santhom Public School in Vengur overturned while climbing a hill, killing one and injuring at least 15 students. The incident raised concerns about school buses of the safety of the mountains.
Investigation underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident to determine the cause of the crash. Initial reports indicated that the bus lost control while traveling down the hill, but the exact cause remains unclear.
