Kerala blasts: 'Preliminary investigation points to IED device as probe unfolds,' says DGP

One person was killed while 35 others were injured when multiple explosions rocked a convention center in Kalamassery area of Kerala's Kochi

Kerala DGP Dr Shaik Darvesh Saheb said that the police found an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) placed in a tiffin box has been recovered from the site of the blasts. Speaking to reporters, he said, "Preliminary investigation shows it is an IED device and we are investigating it."

He further said, "Today morning at 9:40 am approximately there was an explosion at Zamra International Convention & Exhibition Centre in which one person died and 36 persons are undergoing treatment."

"In the convention center, we witnessed a regional convention happening. All our senior officers are on the spot. Our additional DGP is also in the way. I will also reach the spot shortly. We are conducting a thorough investigation, we will find out who is behind this and take strict action," DGP Darvesh said.

He said that the police would be constituting a special team to investigate the matter. "We will be constituting a special team today itself after I reach the spot," the DGP added.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and National Security Guard (NSG) to rush teams to Kerala and start an investigation into the incident.

One dead, 35 injured in multiple blast

One person was killed while 35 others were injured when multiple explosions rocked a convention center in Kalamassery area of Kerala's Kochi on Sunday. 

A church program was underway at the convention center. Eyewitnesses have stated that three explosions was heard in the area. A high alert has been issued in the entire state following the blast. Meanwhile, the reasons for the blast are not yet known, police are investigating.
