Karnataka to hang two death row convicts after President rejects mercy pleas

The petitions were filed by the condemned prisoner's mother Chellamma and by people and members from the Badrayyanahalli Kuratti Hosur gram panchayat.

Subsequently, the case was sent to the President in June. Mukherjee rejected the petition on the advice of the home ministry.

Earlier, on July 22, President Mukherjee had rejected  the mercy petition of Magan Lal from Madhya Pradesh, found guilty of murdering five of his daughters on June 11, 2010.

Maganlal was saved from hanging hours before when the Chief Justice of India in a late night order stayed the execution. The matter is now pending before the Supreme Court.

Among the first mercy petitions to be disposed of by President Mukherjee included that of Mumbai 26/11 Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab. He was  executed in November 2012. The next to be hanged was Parliament death row convict Afzal Guru. He was whisked in secrecy to Pune Yerwada jail in the dead of night and hanged the next mornin
