Mumbai, June 12: Veteran investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey (56), who was shot dead by unknown assailants on Saturday, was cremated today at suburban Ghatkopar.
Maharashtra PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal and a large number of media persons had turned up to pay their last respects to the senior journalist.
Dey, who worked as Editor (Special Investigation) in Mid-Day, was shot dead by four unidentified persons in suburban Powai last afternoon. He had extensively covered crime and underworld over two decades.
Dey is survived by his wife Shubha Sharma and mother.
Bhujbal assured the victim's family that the culprits would be arrested soon.
“This is a very sad incident. A special team of the Crime Branch has already begun a probe into the murder. They are also looking into the involvement of persons associated with oil mafia and underworld,” Bhujbal told reporters.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has called for an emergency meeting which will be attended by the Home Minister R R Patil and Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik.
Demanding for a more stringent law, media persons have sought that attack on a journalist be made a non-bailable offence. PTI
