J&K: LeT terrorist killed in Kulgam encounter; IED recovered in Pulwama

On Thursday, two security personnel and two civilians were injured in firing by LeT terrorists during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam.

Jammu and Kashmir: LeT terrorist killed by security forces in Kulgam

A major tragedy has been averted before Independence Day, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said on Friday after one Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist was killed during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam. Two security personnel, civilians were also injured in an overnight encounter triggered by the ultras opening fire on a BSF convoy in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kumar, the terrorist who was killed in the Kulgam encounter was a close associate of top JeM commander Lamboo who was recently killed in an encounter. Lamboo allegedly belongs to Hafiz Saeed's family. "Usman, the terrorist killed in the Kulgam encounter, is a Pakistani & a close associate of top JeM commander Lamboo who was recently killed in an encounter. It confirms Pakistan’s involvement in the attack on the BSF convoy," Kumar said.

"Kulgam Encounter Update: Operation is over now. A major tragedy has been averted before Independence Day. NHW will open for traffic shortly," tweeted Kashmir Zone Police quoting the IGP Kashmir.

"Search was difficult at night. So, we searched today morning. Body of a Pakistani terrorist, called Usman, was found. He was active for past 6 months. AK 47, magazines, grenade, rocket launcher grenade found. This shows that a major incident was going to take place," Kumar said.

The IGP had Thursday said the two trapped terrorists belong to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

The encounter broke out after the militants opened fire on a BSF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. There were no injuries in the initial attack.

"Around 3 pm, terrorists fired upon the convoy of BSF on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway near Malpora Mir Bazar area of Kulgam. However, the fire was retaliated by an ROP (road opening party) of police and security forces," a police spokesman said.

Reinforcement of Police and Army reached immediately and cordoned off the area, he said.

"The force party ensured not to give any chance to the terrorists to escape. The terrorists managed to took shelter in a nearby huge building. The holed-up terrorists fired indiscriminately upon the joint party of police/security forces which was retaliated, leading to an encounter," he said.

The spokesman said a CRPF and an Army personnel and two civilians got injured in the indiscriminate firing by the terrorists. All the injured have been take to a hospital for treatment, he said. . 

Meanwhile, security forces averted a major tragedy as they recovered and defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Dadsara area of Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday late night. The incident was reported 2 days ahead of the Independence Day celebration on August 15.
