PM Modi inaugurates renovated complex of Jallianwala Bagh memorial

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the renovated complex of the Jallianwala Bagh memorial via video conference. Modi also launched museum galleries developed at the memorial in Amritsar. The event showcased multiple development initiatives taken by the government to upgrade the complex.

The four museum galleries have been created through adaptive reuse of redundant and underutilised buildings. The galleries showcase the historical value of events that unfolded in Punjab during that period, with the fusion of audio-visual technology, including projection mapping and 3D representation, as well as art and sculptural installations.

PM MODI ADDRESS: KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Jallianwala Bagh is the place which gave courage to countless revolutionaries, sacrificers, fighters like Sardar Udham Singh, Sardar Bhagat Singh to die for the freedom of India.
  • Those 10 minutes of April 13, 1919, became the saga of our freedom struggle, due to which we are able to celebrate the festival of freedom today.  Getting the modern look of Jallianwala Bagh Memorial in the 75th year of independence, is an opportunity of great inspiration for all of us.

  • We have also seen another horror like Jallianwala Bagh at the time of partition of India. The hard working and lively people of Punjab have been the biggest victims of Partition. We still feel the pain of what happened at the time of Partition in every corner of India and especially in the families of Punjab.

  • It is not right for any country to ignore such horrors of its past. Therefore, India has decided to observe 14 August every year as 'Vibhajan Vibhishika Memorial Day'.

  • Today, anywhere in the world, if any Indian is in trouble, then India stands up to help them with all its might. Be it the Corona period or the crisis of Afghanistan, the world has experienced it continuously. Hundreds of people from Afghanistan are being brought to India under Operation Devi Shakti.

  • Our tribal society has had great contribution in our freedom struggle. It did not get as much place in the history books as it should have. Work is currently underway on museums showing tribal freedom fighters and their struggle in 9 states of the country.

  • It was also the aspiration of the country that there should be a national memorial for our soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice. I am satisfied that the National War Memorial is instilling in the youth of today the spirit of protecting the nation and sacrificing everything for the country.

A sound and light show was also set up to display the events that happened on April 13, 1919, when the British forces fired indiscriminately on a large and peaceful gathering of protesters, killing over 1,000 people and wounding hundreds of them.

"Multiple development initiatives have been undertaken at the complex. Elaborate heritage restoration works have been carried out in sync with the local architectural style of Punjab. The Shaheedi well has been repaired and restored with a redefined superstructure. The heart of the Bagh, the flame monument, has been repaired and restored, water body rejuvenated as a lily pond, and the pathways made broader for better navigability," a statement said.

Several new and modern amenities have been added, including redefined paths of movement with appropriate signages, illumination of strategic spots, landscaping and hardscaping with a native plantation, and installation of audio nodes throughout the garden.

Also, newer areas have been developed for housing the Salvation Ground, Amar Jyoti and Flag Mast, it added.

Union Minister of Culture, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Ministers of State for Culture, Governors and chief ministers of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab, and members of Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust among others were present on the occasion.
