Srinagar, Mar 10: The chief of operations of Jaish-e-Mohammad Sajjad Afghani and his bodyguard were killed in an encounter with security forces at Foreshore Road near Dal Lake in the outskirts of the city today.
Acting on specific information, police followed a private car moving along the Foreshore road on the banks of Dal lake and intercepted the vehicle, officials said.
They said the militants opened firing on the police, which retaliated. Afghani and his bodyguard were killed in the ensuing brief encounter, they said.
Police said, Sajjad Afghani along with his bodyguard were proceeding in a green coloured Maruti Zen without a number plate towards Hazratbal, when police stopped their car on Foreshore Road near Dal Lake.
The two fired at the police, and in the ensuing encounter, both were killed. Both were Pakistani nationals, S M Sahai, IGP Kashmir zone, told newsmen.
Sajjad Afghani was the mastermind behind several terror attacks in the valley. PTI
