Bangalore: Bangalore Police today arrested Mehdi Masroor Biswas, hailing from West Bengal, who use to work as a manufacturing executive in the day time in a multi-national company, and used to be active on social media at night to propagate the activities of ISIS, the dreaded terrorist outfit which has occupied a large swathe of territory in Syria and Iraq.
Police claimed, Mehdi Masroor Biswas was arrested "on the basis of credible intelligence inputs received by Bangalore police".
Biswas' father is a retired employeed of West Bengal State Electricity Board, and his parents and two elder sisters live in West Bengal. Biswas used to earn an annual package of Rs 5.3 lakhs per annum in a multi-national company in Bangalore.
An engineer by qualification, he operated @ShamiWitness twitter account for the last several years, by taking a 60GB monthly internet connection. He used to read all breaking news websites related to ISIS/ISIL, police said.
Biswas had a following of more than 17 thousand Twitter users and he used to ferociously tweet by aggregating information about ISIS and closely watched developments of this region, police said.
Twentyfour-year-old Biwas was particularly close to English speaking terrorists of ISIS and he became a source of incitement and information for the new recruits trying to join ISIS/ISIL. He used to stay in a one-room rented apartment in Bangalore.
Through his social media propaganda, Biswas abetted ISIL in its agendra to wage war against the Asiatic powers, police said. He was careful in hiding his true identity and was confident that it would never get revealed, but his identity was exposed by Britain's Channel 4 television.
An FIR has been registered against Biswas under Indian Penal Code, IT Act 2000 and UAP Act.
