Mohali, Punjab, July 27: A newborn baby weighing a mere 450 grams at birth on April 21 this year, survived the ordeal and was discharged from Fortis Hospital on Thursday after gaining weight up to 1.300 kg.
Dr Sunil Agrawal, who was treating the newborn girl, said it was a unique experience, as underweight infants hardly survive after birth.
The baby was born to Rajni and her husband Ramesh Sharma, and was kept in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital since birth.
Dr Agrawal said, the infant needed to breathe properly in the first 15 days of birth. For the first 12 days, she was on oxygen given artificially.
Two weeks later, the infant began to take nutrition, and after 10 weeks, the baby started intake of milk and water from spoons.
Mother Rajni told the Hindi daily Bhaskar that all her previous three children had died during pregnancy.
Dr Agrawal said, there had been only one previous instance in Indian medical history of an underweight newborn surviving. That was two years ago in Pune, where a 495 gm weight newborn infant survived after birth.
