Beijing: India has done away with one per cent cap on visas being issued for Chinese workers attached to various Chinese projects in the country after streamlining the visa procedures.

The cap, imposed last year over concerns that a large number of Chinese workers were being brought to work in the Chinese projects marginalising employment opportunities for locals, was no longer required as only skilled workers were being given visas to work in India, officials said.

The skilled workers were being given employment visas instead of business category visas which was issued earlier, they said. As a result, the numbers of Chinese workers visas have also come down significantly, they said.

The visas for Chinese workers were being processed within four weeks under this category.  Visas are being scrutinised carefully based on skills and then being given, so there were no complaints from both sides so far, they said.  Streamlining of visas procedures was regarded as an important move as Chinese investment and participation in a host of Indian projects was increasing.  PTI
