India on Friday registered a strong protest with Bangladesh over comments by the 'advisor' to its interim government, Mahfuj Alam. The MEA in its weekly media briefing said that it would like to remind all concerned to be mindful of their public comments. According to some reports, Mahfuz Alam, a close aide of Muhammad Yunus and an advisor to the interim government, stoked controversy as he said that West Bengal, Assam and Tripura “are part of Bangladesh”.
In what can be termed an attempt to instigate northeast India, Mahfuz Alam in a Facebook post wrote that cultures of Bangladesh and Northeast are similar. His post also claimed that the creation of Bangladesh was a result of the “anti-Bengal attitude” of some upper-caste Hindus.
In its statement, the MEA said, "We have registered our strong protest on this issue with the Bangladesh side. We understand that the post being referred to has reportedly been taken down.”
