Unable to put up with constant harassment over talking to her friends on her mobile and wearing jeans while going out with them,a 22-year-old housewife ended her life at Kandivali (W) in Mumbai on Saturday night, reports Mumbai Mirror.
Based on a complaint filed by her father, police arrested her husband and father-in-law, and registered a case of abetment to suicide.
Police said the victim, Kiran Gupta, married Manoj Kumar Gupta in June 2009,and lived with her in-laws at Ganesh Nagar.
On Saturday, Kiran and Manoj had an argument, during which he threw her clothes out of the house. Later that day, when she was alone at home, she reportedly hanged herself.
According to her father, Shiv Prakash Gupta, since her marriage, Kiran was harassed by her husband Manoj and her father-inlaw Mithailal Gupta. She was keen on studies, and used to visit a private college with her friends, he said.
Her husband did not like her talking to her friends on the mobile, and constantly quarrelled with her over this. He also objected to her wearing jeans and going out with her friends for movies.
Recently, Kiran went to stay with her parents as her mother was unwell. On Tuesday, her father-in-law came to take her back. He threatened not to ever take her back if she did not return with him, he said, adding that the couple had since been quarrelling.
Sub-Inspector Sudhakar Kore of the Kandivali police said a case of abetment to suicide has been registered against the husband and father-in-law,and they have been arrested. We are investigating to find out exactly how she was being harassed, he added.
