Heat wave leaves 153 dead in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad: Heat wave in several parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has claimed 153 lives so far even as people continued to reel under intense heat wave conditions, officials said on Saturday.

As many as 73 persons died in Telangana and 80 deaths were recovered in Andhra Pradesh due to severe heatwave conditions prevailed in the two states, officials said.

"73 persons died in Telangana as per the information received till last evening," Revenue Secretary BR Meena told.

40 persons lost their lives in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh followed by Visakhapatnam 12 and Srikakulam eight while in Telangana, 28 persons died due to heat wave in Nalgonda district followed by 22 deaths in Karimnagar and nine in Khammam district, they said.

The toll pertains to the period from May 18 till the last evening for Andhra Pradesh and April 15 till the last evening for Telangana, the officials said.

Severe heatwave conditions prevailed over some parts in the districts of Adilabad, Warangal, Hyderabad, Khammam, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda and Nizamabad Karimnagar of Telangana.

The highest maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius was recorded at Khammam, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Ramagundam on Thursday, according to the officials of India Meteorological department.

For Hyderabad the forecast for Saturday would be around 44 degrees Celsius, they said.

On Thursday, heat wave conditions prevailed over some parts in the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Chittoor of Rayalaseema.

The maximum temperature of 46 degrees Celsius was recorded at Nandigama, they said, adding heat wave conditions would continue till Sunday.
