Bangalore: The Karnataka High Court yesterday adjourned to next week hearing of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's plea to implead her in a petition filed by DMK leader K Anbazhagan challenging the appointment of Bhavani Singh as Special Public Prosecutor, who was later removed, in the disproportionate assets case against her and others.
Justice A S Bopanna adjourned the hearing, noting the matter was pending before the Supreme Court, where Jayalalithaa has made a plea against the removal of Singh as SPP.
Jayalalithaa had on August 26 moved the High Court seeking to implead herself but the next day, the Karnataka Government issued a notification withdrawing the appointment of Singh as SPP with immediate effect without citing reasons.
The notification came within days of Anbazhagan moving the High Court against the February 2 appointment of Singh, alleging serious lapses on his part in the trial.
Counsel for Jayalalithaa and others who had filed impleading applications had submitted that they were “totally in the dark” about the withdrawal of Singh's appointment.
Jayalalithaa had been charged with accumulating Rs 66.65 crore wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income when she was Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996. A Special Court here is trying the case.
