Thane: Relatives and friends mourned the death of Kishore Kamble (21), a resident of Dnyaneshwar Nagar, following internal injuries to his chest after he fell from a 20-ft-high hhuman pyramid during the dahi handi celebrations last week.
He is the first victim of dahi handi celebrations in Thane, reports Times of India. Kishore was part of a local troupe—Om Sai Mitra Mandal that had attempted six-layered human pyramids at Shivaji Nagar. He hid the pain from his parents for fear of being admonished by them.
On Saturday, Kishore was rushed to a hospital after he complained of breathlessness and acute pain in the chest and abdomen. Hours after his admission to a private hospital, he was declared dead.
Prima facie, the cause of death seems to be internal bleeding in the chest and abdomen.
“While making a few unsuccessful attempts to reach the pot, he had come down crashing,'' said Vijay Jadhav, a friend. A relative V V Kamble said, “He was always eager to participate in local festivals.''
Sena corporator Santosh Vadavle said doctors' reports confirmed that water had accumulated in his chest. Sena leader Eknath Shinde announced that the party would bear the education expenses of Kishore's siblings. The Sena plans to give Rs 1 lakh to the family.
Alarmed at the spate of accidents during Dahi Handi contests, Mumbai's top neurosurgeon, in consultation with his colleagues, has sent a strongly-worded letter to the Health Minister asking for saftey measures for the participants.
Mumbai Mirror reports that at least four injured participants can never walk again.
