Ahmedabad: Gujarat Government yesterday decided to hike daily minimum wages of farm labourers by 25 per cent at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
“To ease the burden of farm labourers in the current situation, minimum daily wages for farm labourers has been increased to Rs 150 from Rs 120,” government spokesperson Nitin Patel said here yesterday.
Patel said minimum daily wages for farm labourers in Gujarat is more than the minimum daily wages fixed by the central government.
“This is even more than the existing minimum daily wages of Rs 137 fixed by the Union government,” he said.
Patel said there are around 72 lakh farm labourers in Gujarat and from now on each of them would receive Rs 150 per day, instead of Rs 120.
The Gujarat government claimed that this would amount to annual economic benefits of Rs 3,370 to Rs 5,000 crore to farm labourers.
