Chennai: Tamil Nadu government yesterday informed the high court that if prohibitory orders are lifted in Dharmapuri, where a Dalit youth recently ended his life triggering violence, there is every possibility that tensions may flare up again.
C Vidyadharan, President of Lok Janasakthi Party, in his petition pleaded that prohibitory orders under Section 144 (1)of CrPC may be ordered to be lifted.
Tamil Nadu government had filed its status report in this regard.
Referring to the sequences of events after the death of Dalit youth Elavarasan, whose marriage to a caste Hindu girl sparked violence at Dharmapuri district last November, the government said it has become indispensable for it to pass prohibitory orders.
It said the orders had been promulgated in the district to maintain tranquility and further submitted that since the issue of inter-caste marriage has been used by some political parties and communal organisations to promote their strength by kindling the feelings of public, it had become necessary for it to pass the orders.
It further said communal tension between two communities are still continuing and therefore prohibitive order under Section 144(1) CrPC be continued till normalcy was restored.
A Division Bench comprising Justices V Dhanapalan and C T Selvam, before which the case came up for hearing, posted the matter for further hearing after a week.
23-year-old Ilavarasan, whose marriage to Divya triggered anti-Dalit violence in three villages of Dharmapuri district in November last year, was found dead along the railway track on July 4, a day after she said she would live with her mother.
