Governor Urges Bengal Political Parties To Accept Verdict

Kolkata, May 13: On the eve of the counting of votes for the crucial assembly elections in West Bengal  Governor M K Narayanan on Thursday  urged political parties to accept the poll verdict in the right spirit and appealed for calm.


“I am sure that all political parties in the state will accept the people's verdict in the right spirit and urge their followers and supporters to remain calm and help sustain peace throughout the state,” the Governor said in a statement here.

Expressing hope that people would again exemplify their respect for the decision that emerged and the rule of law, Narayanan said “I am confident that whatever the people's verdict on 13 May, West Bengal will rejoice in the triumph of Democracy.”

Stating that the polls were held in a free, fair and peaceful manner under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, he said “Reportedly, not one major violent incident took place on any of the six polling dates.  “I congratulate the people of West Bengal and all state and state and central government officials, the police and polling personnel, associated with the election process for this achievement.”

The Governor said that people had demonstrated remarkable patience and composure and reaffirmed their deep seated commitment to the finest tenets of democracy during the long-drawn out election process. PTI
