New Delhi, Oct 7: Six-year-old Abhaya Gupta was enjoying the Dussehra event at the historic Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, hundreds of meters away in the presence of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, when the unthinkable happened.
As the huge Ravana effigy burnt into flames to the sound of crackers and applause from the thousands of people pressent, the bamboo pole holding the effigy suddenly fell on Abhaya's head.
Abhaya fell unconscious. She was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where doctors tried to revive her, but she succumbed to injuries.
Abhaya's mother was inconsolable, while her father had died earlier. The relatives alleged that the Ramlila organisers were callous and irresponsible because of which this mishap occured.
