New Delhi: Sushil Kumar, winner of the fifth season of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) in 2011, now lives in poverty, struggling to make ends meet. He was the first person to win Rs 5 crore as prize money in the show.
Sushil Kumar was a computer operator from Motihari in North Bihar till he was declared winner from KBC. Now he is jobless. He does not even have his pre-KBC Rs 6,000 per month computer job through MGNREGA, the rural development ministry's job generation scheme.
Sushil once got all the spotlight and he too basked in the glory of KBC victory. His dream was to take coaching in New Delhi and become IAS Officer.
He got offers to endorse a few products and an invitation to be the brand ambassador of rural development ministry came his way.
He was an inspiration to the youth, who too aspired to make it to the show and win 5 crore.
Once former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked him to make an inspirational speech to to JD(U) youth wing activists gathered at his house in Patna.
But it seems as though his life has taken a full circle.
“What I am left with now is very little money, no career prospect and a whole lot of disappointment”, Kumar told an English newspaper.
After tax deduction his prize money reduced to Rs 3.6 crore. Most of the money was spent on building a house and purchasing land. He also helped his brothers set up a business. But his wife is discontent. She feels that they were unable to use the money appropriately for themselves.
Sushil has only some amount of the prize money left, which he has saved up in bank. He gets his daily income from drawing milk from four cows.
Sushil considers teaching as an option since he is ‘B.Ed'.
“But I can't say my earning in anywhere near enough”, he admitted.
