Kolkata: West Bengal government has decided to supply food grains directly to the dealers from the FCI godowns to stop malpractices during transit.
Announcing this here today, state's Food and Supply Minister Jyotipriyo Mallick told reporters that the step was taken following complaints of malpractices during transit period.
Meanwhile, the Modified Ration (MR) distributors of the hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling district were persuaded to lift stock of food grains from Siliguri by way of requisition of vehicles by the RTO and the same were sent to their godowns with the help of police escort, Mallick said.
Till August 31, stock lifted by the MR distributors in hill sub-divisions were 53,839 quintals of rice and 57,706 quintals of wheat.
The distributors delivered 14,892 quintals of rice and 4,749 quintals of wheat and 8,202 quintals of atta to the MR dealers, who supplied those food grains to the consumers till September 1, he added.
Meanwhile, consequent upon the continuous strike in the three hill sub-divisions in Darjeeling, the government has ordered that all the offices involved with the Public Distribution System in the hills would remain open on Saturday and Sunday.
