Srinagar, Oct 1: Indian security forces Monday shot dead five Pakistani militants in Jammu and Kashmir after a seven-hour long encounter, police said.
All of them belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen group, a police officer told IANS. He said the five were from Pakistan and were killed in a gun battle in a forested part of Garderbal district.
A huge cache of arms and ammunition was seized from the site.
The officer said the group had infiltrated into the Kashmir Valley about a month back from Pakistan.
The counter-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a joint operation early Monday following a tip off, police said.
"When the militants were surrounded and asked to surrender, they started firing at the security forces," the officer said.
