Shaheed Minar

Located in Kolkata, Shaheed Minar was built in 1828 in memory of Major-general Sir David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company.

Originally known as the ‘Ochterlony Monument', Shaheed Minar was built to commemorate both Sir David Ochterlony's successful defense of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and the victory of the East India Company's armed forces over the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War.Designed by J.P Parker, Shaheed Minar stands with a height of 157 ft with a foundation of Egyptian style, a Syrian upper portion and a Turkish dome.

Built by Burn & Company, the minar has a total of 218 steps until the top of the tower along with two balconies at the top.

The minar rededicated to the memory of the martyrs of the Indian freedom movement and was renamed as ‘Shaheed Minar' in 1969.
