A blast inside the district court complex here on Thursday left one person dead and three injured, police said. According to reports, the blast took place inside a bathroom on the second floor of the court building. The explosion was so powerful that it damaged a wall of the bathroom resulting in serious injuries to several people present inside. Window panes of several rooms were also damaged in the blast. Television images showed smoke coming out of the building and people running out to safety soon after the blast.
The National Security Guard (NSG) has also been called in. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also sought a report from Punjab on the explosion, sources said.
Police have issued high alert across the state. There is already a high alert at religious places, but now security has been increased in public places also. "Our forensic team has reached. Ours is a border state, so we cannot rule out anything, including the possibility of external forces, as they never want Punjab to be stable; the whole state is on high alert," Dy Punjab CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
Several police teams, fire tenders are at the spot. Security forces have cordoned off the area and a search operation has been launched in nearby areas to hunt down any suspicious person.
Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh also tweeted about the blast. "Disturbing news of a blast at Ludhiana court complex. Saddened to know about the demise of 2 individuals, Praying for the recovery of those injured. @PunjabPoliceInd must get to the bottom of this."
