80-year-old Sengupta is survived by two daughters, family members said, adding that his wife pre-deceased him. Sengupta joined civil services in 1957 and was revenue secretary to the government and Member of the Planning Commission.

He was also the chairman of the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises.

He was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha from Contai (West Bengal) parliament seat on Trinamool Congress ticket, but joined Congress in 2004 after the UPA I government came to power.
