Aizawl: The Mizoram assembly Tuesday passed a resolution urging an end to "discrimination and violence" against people from the northeastern region.
"People of northeastern states have been living in different parts of the country. There must not be any discrimination and violence against the people from the region," said the resolution that was passed unanimously.
This is possibly the first such resolution passed by any state legislative assembly in the northeastern states.
The resolution introduced by opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator Lalruatkima said: "The house seriously regrets the discrimination and violence against people from the northeastern region in various parts of the country which has resulted in loss of some innocent lives in some cases and offers condolences to the aggrieved families."
"The house felt that henceforth such discrimination and violence against people from the region would not take place," it said.
Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju recently said in New Delhi that the central government would soon implement recommendations of Bezbaruah committee formed to look into the issues relating to the attacks on the people of northeast region.
The minister also said an exclusive helpline will be set up for northeast people.
