New Delhi, Oct 27: Eid-ul-Zuha, the ‘festival of sacrifice', was today celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety across the capital.

Thousands of Muslims attended prayers at various mosques in the city and wished each other on the festive occasion.

People gathered in large numbers at Jama and Fatehpuri Masjids to offer special prayers. They visited the houses of their friends and relatives and exchanged gifts.

Eid-ul-Zuha, also known as Bakrid, is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God.

It is celebrated approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan, which is celebrated as Eid-ul-Fitr.

The festival comes a day after pilgrims conducting Haj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, descend from Mount Arafat.
