Mumbai: The Election Commission has finally given a nod to the appointment of Rakesh Maria as the police commissioner of Mumbai.
Maria is a 1981 batch IPS officer from Mumbai and EC order dated January 9 had prohibited appointment of an officer in his home district.
Maria has been the top contender for the designation after the Satyapal Singh resigned.
He headed the investigations after the 1993 blasts 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.
Considering his marvelous work in the field Home department wrote to the chief electoral officer of the state, Nitin Gadre, asking to grant exemption for the appointment of Maria.
Gadre then wrote to the Election Commission of India, explaining the facts of the case and now finally the Election Commission told the state government that Rakesh Maria can be appointed as the police commissioner of Mumbai, even though it is his hometown.
