Hyderabad: There is no tsunami threat to the country in the wake of the powerful quake that shook Afghanistan, Pakistan and India today, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) here said.

"This earthquake happened on land part of Hindukush region in Afghanistan. Based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, tsunami threat does not exist for India," INCOIS said in a bulletin on its website.

A massive earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 14.39 IST today in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan.

Panic-stricken people rushed out of houses and buildings in north India as the tremors unleashed by the quake lasted for almost a minute.

The earthquake, with its epicentre in the Hindukush mountain range, sent ripples across several states like Jammu and Kashmir, National Capital Region (NCR), Punjab, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.

In J-K capital Srinagar, residents said they saw the buildings "swinging" in a scary reminder of the devastating quake of 2005.
