New Delhi, Aug 5: The Delhi University Teacher's Association (DUTA) held a protest Monday against the human resource development ministry's decision to introduce the point system for teachers' appointment and promotions and granting autonomy to some colleges under the varsity.
DUTA also submitted a memorandum to roll back both the decision taken by the ministry.
"In its present form, the point system is designed to deny promotions and career advancement to most teachers and against the performance based appraisal system (Academic Performance Indicator)," said DUTA president Amar Deo Sharma.
The point system is part of the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations 2010. As per the amendment to the regulations, the point system will be used as the minimum qualification for appointment and promotion of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges.
Under the system, teachers are required to earn 75 points out of 125 from the indicators defined by UGC.
"It will also encourage an unhealthy rat-race for the accumulation of points, leading to undermining of the teaching learning process," claimed Sharma.
DUTA has also raised opposition to the ministry's intent of granting autonomy to colleges like St.Stephen's, Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) and Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (NSIT).
"The intent to grant autonomy is resolved to fight any attempt to dismember and fragment the university and to transfer its prestigious institutions to corporate interest,"said DUTA secretary S.D.Siddiqui.
