Amritsar, Oct 11: Punjab will launch a state-wide campaign to check cases of crime in the state and all district police chiefs have been asked to personally monitor the drive, the government said today.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, speaking after a review meeting here, asserted that any breach of law in the state will be strongly dealt with.

Stating that local police officials will be directly held accountable for the crime in their area, Sukhbir said police has been asked to launch a drive against unscrupulous elements and 700 such people have already been booked under various cases.

A Rs 52-crore rapid rural police patrolling system will become operational from next month to ensure effective monitoring and surveillance, Badal said, stressing that the government has taken various initiatives to deal with cases of drug trafficking.

He said within next 6 months, all corporation cities in the state will be put under high-tech close circuit cameras for keeping a strict vigil on mischievous activities.

The deputy chief minister said government is making all efforts to bring Amritsar on the international tourism map and projects worth Rs 2,951 crore have been approved for revamping infrastructure in the holy city and its periphery towns.

He said the government has sought services of an international town planner for drawing city's urban development blue print keeping its cultural and religious heritage intact.
