New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit appeared to be in her elements yesterday as she jived and sang a popular number with the band Astitva at a function here, bringing the audience to its feet.

75-year-old Dikshit joined the group when it presented the popular song “Maa Tujhe Salaam” from  A R Rahman's album ‘Vande Matarm' before a gathering at the Yamuna Sports Complex in East Delhi.

Hundreds of people, who were waiting for Rahul Gandhi to come to the function, erupted in joy and started clapping to the tune of the song when they saw Dikshit shake a leg. A number of Congress leaders also joined the Chief Minister.  Dikshit also sang the song along with the group.  The function was organised to grant freehold rights residents of 45 resettlement colonies which were developed almost 50 years ago.

Later, Gandhi distributed documents conferring freehold rights to several occupents of resettlement colonies.  Some of the beneficiaries said they wished Gandhi becomes the Prime Minister soon.

“I am very happy to get the freehold rights of the property after so many years. God bless Rahul Gandhi. I wished him to become Prime Minister soon,” said Shankarlal, a resident of Mangalpuri.

He said he has already paid Rs 45,000 as circle rate for getting freehold rights of his plot.

90-year-old Ramavati, who was also given documents by Gandhi conferring freehold rights over her property in Trilokpuri, said, “God bless him (Gandhi). I am very happy today.”

Most of the people, who were given freehold rights in the first batch of about a dozen, said they have been associated with Congress for last several years.
