A property dealer was arrested in New Delhi for allegedly raping his 27-year-old Brazilian tenant twice within a week after mixing sedatives in her coffee, police said on Wednesday. The arrest came after medical examination of the woman confirmed rape, Additional Commissioner of Police (South East) Virender Chahal said. The incident was reported from south- east Delhi's C R Park.
Amarjeet (35) was detained after the Brazilian, who is pursuing a Mass Communication course in a private institution in Noida, approached police claiming that her landlord raped her twice after giving her coffee laced with sedatives. "I want justice," the Brazilian said after Delhi Women's Commission Chairperson Barkha Singh met her at the police station. Singh said it was a "shameful incident".
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit condemned the incident and said police should step up efforts to ensure safety of the citizens, particularly women. "This kind of incident should not happen...There should be a sense of safety and security for everybody, particularly women," Dikshit said. The woman, who came to India in the first week of June, has been staying in the rented accommodation since June 19. She claimed that on June 20, her landlord came to meet her and offered coffee. She fell unconscious after drinking the coffee and the landlord raped her on that day. He allegedly raped her again on June 21.
"On June 27, when he tried to rape her, she resisted and asked him to leave the premises," a senior police official said. Amarjeet was produced before a local court which sent him to one day's police custody. PTI
