Delhi police registers FIRs against Owaisi, Yati Narsinghanand over inflammatory remarks

The development comes amid the row over the suspension of BJP leader Nupur Sharma for her alleged controversial religious remarks on a TV debate.

Delhi police on Thursday registered FIRs against All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Dasna Devi Temple priest Yati Narsinghanand for allegedly posting and sharing messages on social media against the maintenance of public tranquillity and inciting people on divisive lines. The FIRs were registered after an analysis of social media. 

The cases have been registered under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code. Notices will be sent to the social media intermediaries for the details. 

The FIRs were registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit of the Special Cell, Delhi Police against several persons under various provisions for spreading hateful messages, inciting groups and creating an atmosphere detrimental to the maintenance of public tranquillity. 

The development comes amid the row over the suspension of BJP leader Nupur Sharma for her alleged controversial religious remarks on a TV debate.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police on Tuesday said that it has provided security to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma after an FIR was registered on a complaint that she was getting death threats following her controversial religious remarks. 

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday suspended its spokesperson Nupur Sharma from the party's primary membership after her alleged inflammatory remarks against minorities. While suspending Sharma, the BJP said that it "respects all religions" and is "strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion". The BJP leader's remark drew sharp reactions from Gulf countries. India has said that it had taken strong action against those who made controversial remarks against minorities.
