New Delhi, Sept 5:The Centre has approved a 200 per cent salary hike for Delhi MLAs from Rs 28,000 to Rs 84,000 a month.
Delhi Assembly will take up the bill today and pass it, after which the new salaries will be implemented. The daily allowance of the MLAs has been doubled.
The members are presently paid Rs 500 per day only when the House is in session. In the new bill, the members will get Rs 1,000 per day for 365 days a year till the end of their five-year term.From Rs 20,000 a year, the daily allowance of an MLA will shoot up to Rs 3.65 lakhs annually.
According to the new salaray breakup, an MLA in Delhi will now get a basic salary of Rs 12,000, constituency allowance of Rs 18,000, telephone allowance Rs 12,000, water and electricity Rs 6,000, and conveyance allowance Rs 6,000.
According to an HT report, with other perks remaining the same, the basic salary of all the seven Delhi ministers will be Rs 20,000.
The report says, the Centre's nod came within days of West Bengal and Jharkhand governments hiking the salaries of their MLAs.
The last time the salaries of Delhi MLAs were revised was four years ago in 2007. Annual travel allowance for a Delhi MLA has been hiked from Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000. The Home Ministry however rejected their demand for free travel on Delhi Metro.
The Delhi government's proposal had cited reasons of inflation and increased cost of living for hiking the MLAs' salaries.
