New Delhi, Mar 9: Shrinivasan Sharma, a 76-year-old resident of Pitampura, northwest Delhi, has filed a writ petition before the Delhi High court for removal of three cellphone towers from his locality, saying that high amount of radiation from these towers led to the death of his 47-year-old son due to cancer last year.
The three cellphone towers are located a few metres away from his home in Sharda Niketan colony.
The 76-year-old father has alleged that three "deadly" towers installed in the 24-house Sharda Niketan colony have not only claimed his son's life but also killed as many as seven others in less than two years.
Says Sharma: "None of these individuals had a history of cancer in the family. It is mostly senior citizens who have fallen victim to radiation, as they tend to spend more time at home."
Meanwhile, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has told the high court that it will formulate a new set of guidelines on installing cellphone towers in residential areas.
A local resident Ramnath Garg, whose son had died due to health problems caused by cellphone towers, had also filed a petition.
Sharma, through advocate Vikas Nagwan, in his petition alleged that his family members and other people in the neighbourhood have been facing problems like severe headaches, sleeplessness, constant fever and pain in the eyes ever since the cellphone towers were put up.
