New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today deferred the hearing on bail plea of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, arrested in a sedition case, till February 29.

The Delhi Police, which is opposing Kanhiya's bail, also filed a status report before the HC bench of Justice Pratibha Rani on the ongoing investigation in the matter related to February 9 event at the JNU campus that led to Kanhaiya arrest.

Police told HC that they are moving remand application to seek Kanhaiya's police remand which is required to confront him with JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who surrendered late on Tuesday Night.

The court deferred the hearing after Kanhaiya's advocates Kapil Sibal and Rebecca John asked to postpone the hearing as they will oppose the police remand application.

In the plea, Kanhaiya alleged that no case is made out against him as there was no evidence as he had never raised any anti-national slogan during the February 9 event.

Kanhaiya moved the High Court after the Supreme Court refused to entertain the bail plea, noting that bypassing the High Court would set a wrong precedent.

The security at the High Court was beefed up for the hearing and entry to the courtroom of Justice Rani was restricted to lawyers involved in the case and six media persons.

Kanhaiya is in judicial custody that will expire on March 2. He was arrested in a sedition case on February 12 after an event held on the university campus against execution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. He had allegedly raised anti-India slogans during the rally.
