New Delhi: The Delhi government is gearing up to issue 10 lakh ration cards under the food security scheme in the national capital.

“We have geared up to issue food security ration cards to 10 lakh households. The process of distributing the ration cards will be started within this month,” Commissioner, Food Supply and Weights and Measures, Sajjan Singh Yadav said.

He said over 15 lakh applications have been received so far and added that about 1,500 people have been deployed to complete the process of issuing the cards.  “After completing preliminary scrutiny of 15 lakh applications, verification of each household is being done,” Yadav said.

With these ration cards, the beneficiaries will get subsidised food grains i.e wheat at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg under the National Food Security Act 2013, he said.

As per the guidelines of the scheme, households having annual income of up to Rs 1 lakh are eligible for getting food security in Delhi.

However, if a household has power connection of more than 2 KW, or if any member of the household owns a property in A to E category colonies, is a government employee or owns a four-wheeler or higher category vehicle, such a household is not eligible for the scheme, he said.

At present, 6.32 lakh households in the national capital are already getting benefits of the food security scheme, he said.
