New Delhi: After completion of first phase of installation of CCTV cameras in 200 DTC buses, the Delhi government now plans to make similar arrangements in orange cluster buses plying in the national capital.
According to the Transport Department, after collecting a report on the operation of CCTVs installed in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, it will take up this project.
At present, there are 1,324 orange cluster buses being operated by the Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS), while DTC operates around 4,900 buses in the capital.
“We are planning to install CCTV cameras in cluster buses as well. We are now awaiting the report on the operation of CCTV cameras installed in DTC's 200 buses. Thereafter, the Government will proceed accordingly,” said a senior official of the transport department.
DTC has already installed CCTV cameras in 200 buses of its fleet as part of a pilot project to enhance security for people, especially women. Three CCTV cameras have been installed in each bus.
The official said in view of women passengers' security, there is also need to install CCTVs in orange cluster buses.
“If we get positive report on CCTV cameras' operation in DTC buses, we will decide how many cluster buses will be included in first phase,” the official added.
“We are monitoring operation of CCTV cameras installed in first phase. In second phase, more buses will come under this project,” said DTC spokesperson R S Minhas.
DTC Chairman and Managing Director Debashree Mukherjee had recently sought Rs. 103.25 crore from the Centre's 'Nirbhaya Fund' to install CCTV cameras in its entire fleet to enhance women security.
In the aftermath of the December 16 gangrape, DTC had also started providing two home guards in buses operating on night services.
