New Delhi, Sep 19 The threat of floods came back to haunt the city again with neighbouring state Haryana releasing over six lakh cusecs of water into Yamuna on Sunday resulting in the rise in water level above the danger mark.
A top offical of Irrigation of Flood Control department said the neighbouring state released a total of 6,53,503 cusecs of water in Yamuna which may result in substantially increase of water level by Monday evening when the water reaches the city.
"The water level in Yamuna was flowing at 205.20 metres, 37 cm above the danger mark of 204.83 metres, at 9pm today. The water level is likely to cross 205.65 meters by tomorrow afternoon," the official said.
The state of Haryana had released nearly 70,000 cusecs of water into Yamuna on Saturday. The official said as a precautionary measure, hundreds of people were evacuated from the low lying areas near the river to safer places.Over 3500 people shifted to relief camps set up by the government following flood-threat last week, are still staying in such camps.
"We are constantly monitoring the situation and all precautionary measures are being taken. The people who had left the camps after the water level in Yamuna receded have been brought back," he said.
Earlier, Haryana had released over 12 lakh cusecs of water into Yamuna which resulted in the rise in its level. The water level had touched 206.78 metres last week.
The rising river had flooded several localities of east Delhi including Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur Pusta, Jagatpur Village and Shastri Nagar.
Flood water had also entered areas like Yamuna Vihar, Madanpur, Sonia Vihar, Nigambodh, Jaitpur, Tibet Market and Yamuna Bazar. Two days back, the water level had receded below the danger mark. PTI
