New Delhi: Deepak Sandhu was today sworn in as India's New Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) by President Pranab Mukherjee in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
She replaced Satyanand Mishra, who retired on Wednesday.
She had previously served as the Media Advisor to the Prime Minister, and the Principal Director General (Media & Communications) in the Press Information Bureau.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, along with other officials and ministers including Finance Minister P Chidambaram, and minister of state in PMO V. Narayanasamy.
Sandhu, a 1971-batch Indian Information Services officer, was the top choice for this post. She will serve as the CIC till December 19, 2013.
Recently, the appointment of the CIC was shrouded in controversy with India's Supreme Court specifying that only retired High Court chief justices and Supreme Court judges can be appointed as state and central CIC's.
However, after evaluating its earlier decision, the court said that even people without a judicial background could be appointed as members of CIC.
