Karimnagar (Telangana): A debt-ridden farmer in Katlakunta village of the district allegedly committed suicide today, police said.
Loka Narayana Reddy (46), a cotton farmer in Katlakunta village under Medipalli mandal, nearly 75 km from here, hanged himself from the ceiling fan at his house as he was under a huge debt burden and was unable to repay it, Station House Officer (SHO) of Medipalli police station said.
He said that according to the family members, Reddy had sown cotton crop in his agricultural fields this year but it did not have enough yield. Earlier, he had gone to a Gulf country for employment and had borrowed a huge sum from private financiers. He returned to his village a couple of months back and resumed farming again.
Due to poor yield and being unable to repay the debt, Reddy took the extreme step, the SHO said.
A case has been registered in this regard and the body sent for post-mortem to the government hospital at Jagtial town.
