New Delhi:  The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday decided to work closely with Delhi Police's special unit dealing with crimes against women for speedy resolution of common cases, an official said.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal visited the office of the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC) at Nanakpura area, where she met Joint Commissioner of Police and SPUWAC head Robin Hibu and Deputy Commissioner of Police Varsha Sharma, a DCW official told IANS.

Maliwal was briefed about the working of SPUWAC through a presentation by Sharma, after which the officials agreed to collaborative functioning of the two organisations.

"It was a fruitful meeting during which both the DCW and the SPUWAC decided to work in collaboration," the DCW official said.

"It often happens that same complaints are made to us (DCW) and also to SPUWAC. In that case, one of the institutions will take up the case so that the complainant does not have to make rounds of both the offices," he added.

The SPUWAC was set up in 2009 and was earlier known as Crime against Women Cell.

Many cases which were earlier registered in the DCW were later taken to SPUWAC, including the case of Lipika Mitra, the wife of Aam Aadmi Party legislator Somnath Bharti. Mitra had filed a complaint of domestic violence against her husband.
